Sporting Goods Archery – What is Sport Archery?

In the field of sporting goods for archery, there are four main types of
bows to choose from - longbows - the traditional style of bow, recurve bows -
the ends of the bow curve away from the archer, compound bows - mechanical bows
that incorporate wheels or cams as pulleys, and crossbows - bow attached to a
stock and held like a rifle.

Longbows are still popular today among archery enthusiasts because of their
simplicity and ties to history. Many historical reenactors are specialists at
longbow crafting and usage.

Crossbows consist of a short, stout bow mounted on a rifle-type stock and are
aimed and shot much like a rifle. This instant familiarity makes them a popular
choice for inexperienced hunters but the trade-off is that a crossbow simply
can't match a modern full-sized compound bow for arrow speed and range.

Recurve Bows - Still popular in sports archery and competitive archery, the
modern recurve bow is made from metals and composite materials while
traditional wooden recurve bows are still a favorite with vintage archery
enthusiasts.

Compound Bows use the mechanical advantage inherent in pulley systems to
create the most powerful bows available today. These powerful and technical
bows are used for both competitive shooting and for bow hunting.

No matter what form of sporting archery you choose, the type of bow you use
and the other equipment you need will be dictated by the rules of that
particular sport. Olympic events, for example, are limited to recurve bows,
while other competitions may have both recurve and compound bow events.

Sport Archery

Target Archery competitions are held both indoors and outdoors and are
divided into individual and team events. For indoor competitions, the targets
are set at distances of 18 m (59ft) and 25 m (82ft). For outdoor competitions,
the targets can range from 30 m (98ft) to 90 m (295ft).

Archers shoot an end of 3 or 6 arrows and then retrieve and score
their arrows. Arrows achieve a one through ten score based on the ten
concentric rings of the target. Arrows touching a ring line are awarded
the higher score.

Different sized targets are used for the different rounds and distances. The
governing body for most target archery competitions is the International
Archery Federation (FITA - Fédération Internationale de Tir à l'Arc)

Field Archery

Field archery competitions involve shooting at various types of targets at
varying distances in wooded settings. Unlike traditional target shooting,
archers in field competitions shoot only one arrow per target. Each round of
the competition is 28 targets in two sets of 14. There are generally three
rounds in a competition, then first being the "Field" round with all
targets at the same distance. The next round, the "Hunter" round is
targets at varying distances and the target colors are reversed with the bull’s-eye
being white and the background being black. The final round, the
"Animal" round uses life-size realistic 3D targets at varying
distances and arrows are scored depending on whether or not they hit vital
areas.

The governing body for Field Archery competitions is the National Field
Archery Association (NFAA).

Other popular events often seen at archery competitions are Clout Archery,
which involves target shooting at extreme distances, and Flight Archery
events where the goal is simply to shoot an arrow the greatest distance. As you
would imagine, events like these are centered on highly specialized bows and
equipment for the single purpose of distance shooting.

Crossbow events are also a popular form of archery competition in many
countries. The governing body for crossbow competitions is
the International Crossbow-shooting Union (Internationale Armbrustschutzen
Union – IAU). One of the big features of this sport is that most competitors
make their own bows following the detailed guidelines supplied by the IAU.

Whatever your preference, archery is a great family hobby and competitive
events make wonderful family outings where everyone can find an event to their
liking and enjoy a great time.
